We found two very run over pennies on our walk this morning

The topic: I’m curious
----------------------------------------------

I'm sure if I took the time to do some research, I'd get an answer, but I'm too lazy.

Yesterday, I made this this for dinner.  It took me about three hours from start to finish.  Took me about a half hour to wash all of the dishes.  And it took me about ten minutes, tops, to eat my dinner.  That’s just amazing.

Anyway, this morning on our walk I started to wonder about one of the ingredients. Where would it appear on the food pyramid?  The ingredient in question is a corn tortilla.  Would it be grain?  Would it be vegetable, since it’s made from ground corn?  We debated a little about it (we have such deeply intellectual conversations at times).  He said “grain”.  I said “yabut…”  Then he said “I wonder what Corn Flakes are considered?”

So, corn tortillas.  Vegetable or grain?  And what about Corn Flakes, while we’re at it?  What’s your opinion on the entire subject?

A sandwich of turkey, cheese, lettuce and avocado on whole wheat bread.  I shared sliced turkey with the cats and left a little avocado in the shell, scraped it up and put it on the floor.

It’s time like this I miss Handsome.  He’d have been all over that avocado.  The only cats who showed any interest at all in it were Lorelei, Rory and Ron Howard.

The topic: The weather
----------------------------------------------

I think today is going to be a beautiful day.  It started off clear and so far, it’s stayed that way.

I thought yesterday would be nice, but the clouds came in and it became a white day.  I don’t like white days.  You know, those days that the sky isn’t cloudy and the sky isn’t clear.  Well, it is technically cloudy, but the clouds are so thin and spread out, there’s no definition to them.  They just make the sky look white.  Thus, a “white day”.

I don’t like white days.

It’s not even 9:30 and all of the doors and windows are open.  It’s 66° outside right now.  I even told Brian that it will soon be time for him to get my Bronco back from his brother so I can get down to Lowe’s and buy plants.  There are still some from last year, but bugs got most of the flowering plants.  Lots of space needs filling and the Bronco is perfect for hauling dirty stuff.

Ah, I hope it stays like this for a while and the white days stay away.

You can have custom sized dust covers for your equipment made.  In the past, I’ve gotten covers for both monitors, my scanners, my laptop, all of my printers, and last week, I got dust covers for my new sewing machine, the attachment, and my heat press.

The vinyl works much better than towels.

The topic: Last Sunday, the phone rang
----------------------------------------------

It was my mom, wanting to know if our cable was out.

I reminded her that we don’t have cable, but a BUD (big ugly dish).  “Oh, yeah, that’s right” she said.  She continued “well, the cable has been out here since yesterday.”  I ask her if anyone has called the cable company.  “Pauline did.”

So, every day, I ask her “did you get your cable back?” and the answer is the same.  “No.”  I told her that she should call them and ask for a refund of the money for service not provide.  “Oh, well, I might and I might not.” Gotta love those old people answers.

So, this morning, about two hours after our regular phone call, she calls me.  She called the cable company. And guess what?  They had no idea the cable was out.  No one had called to make an outage report.  I kind of figure all of the people in the park figured the manager would take care of it.  And some people don’t have phones, either, since their phone service provider is the same as the cable provider.

I asked about Pauline’s call.  She said “well, Pauline doesn’t even have cable.”  I was rolling my eyes here.  I told her “well, maybe they found she had no account and figured she was just a crazy old bat, ‘of course you aren’t getting service, you’re not signed up and you’re not paying for it’.”  She laughed.

She said they’re supposed to be out tomorrow to check on it.

The topic: This really bothers me
----------------------------------------------

I go to a couple of different forums, most of them cat related in some way.  And every once in a while, people get really hard on someone who doesn’t act the way they feel people should act.

Okay, I admit, I do my share of bandwagon riding.  Recently there was a woman who started posting after her mother died last year.  She’d not posted before, but her mother was an active member of the forums, providing us with much valuable information and she was in her element doing research.  So, mom dies, daughter steps in.  A year later, she’s still got the same problems, she rarely posted in support of anyone else, it as always about her and her problems. At one point, her 13 year old son came on and started posting very rude posts to some of the long time members of the board.  Well, you know what hit the fan.  And hit it did.  Big.  I ended up banning her from my forum and chat room web domain. She denied what her son had done until confronted with irrefutable proof.  Even then, she still denied one of the things he’d done one night to one of the members during a chat.

People finally had enough and started harrassing her every time she posted, in hopes that she’d just leave. There were several ongoing discussions about her in a private forum and some of us asked the ones doing the harrassing to please, don’t respond to her at all, because she loved it. It seemed as if being verbally abused gave her reason to breathe, it was really, really strange. Maybe it was just because it was notice that someone was actually reading what she had to say.  I made it clear to her that I thought she had a problem with seeking attention.

Well, even after someone actually took a poll, where over fifty said they wished she’d never post again, ten or so said they didn’t care one way or the other, they never read what she had to say and four said they found her posts fascinating (and you know she was one of those four), she still couldn’t see that people were tired of her whining.

So, she does the foot stomping I’m leaving I’ll never darken your doorstep (or forum) again thing.  I’m sure many of us have seen the melodrama that is so prevalent on the internet.  And I was very pleased when very few said “good riddance”.  She didn’t leave, though, but her postings have greatly dropped and now, the few times she does post is in response to someone else.

So, yes, I’m guilty.

But.

There’s a time when beating someone repeatedly with your opinion serves no constructive purpose.  Case in point, a couple of days ago, one of the longtime members asked for help advice with one of her cats.  He was bleeding from the mouth.  Her husband is an alcoholic, he’s a mean SOB and he’s in very bad shape and most likely won’t last much longer. He controls the finances, she has no money of her own and has no transportation.  She’s been with him for over fifty years.

Immediately there were cries of “your husband must have done it, you take that cat to the vet right this minute! And you should divorce his sorry ass as soon as you leave the vet’s office!”  It went on and on.  The woman wasn’t asking for advice about her marriage, she knows it’s bad, she knows he’s an asshole.  And she knows, in all probability, that he’s not long for this world.  Emphysema and very little kidney function don’t bode well for a heavy drinker.

So, she’s able to get a closer look into the cat’s mouth and it appears to be a bad molar.  Teeth problems are no fun for anyone.  And if the problem is the tooth, I know my vet (and my dentist) treat the infection before they do any dental work.  They don’t want to get any of the bacteria from the infection into the blood system. Fortunately, she had some clindamycin, the same thing my vet gave me for Lisa, Richie and Handsome when they had dental problems.  She’ll be taking him to the vet tomorrow.

Anyway, these same women are still beating that dead horse.  I don’t see any of them telling her if she leaves him, they’ll support her until she’s on her feet.  I don’t see these women offering to go up to her home, help her move out, help her settle someplace else.  I don’t see anyone offering to take up a collection for a hit man. I see nothing at all constructive in their “advice”.  They aren’t telling her something she doesn’t already know. They aren’t listening to what she’s said.

All I see is a couple of self righteous women, so wrapped up in being right and correct, beating this woman over the head repeatedly with their opinions.

And I wish they’d STFU.

Well, I’m glad I got that off of my chest.

The topic: Audits
----------------------------------------------

What a PITA they can be.

So, we had an audit scheduled yesterday, between noon and 2:00.  She might be “a little early”.  Although I’ve been keeping the house pretty decent, there were a couple of windows needed washing (family room and dining room, there was a bit of cat sneeze snot on them and spray marks and dining room window, which has a crock of cat water in front of it, was covered with water drops, compliments of the kitty cats who dip their paws in the water before drinking), floors needed to be rewashed (we’re still trying to find the right cans of Wellness for the cats….some they absolutely do not like and puke up what they don’t just leave in the bowls) and just maintenance work.  And with as many cats as we have, there is quite a bit of maintenance work.

She needed payroll records, tax records, checkbook register, time cards, different things and I got them printed out and files pulled so everything she needed would be at her fingertips.  I worked on that Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Tuesday night, I had a rotten night’s sleep.  I think it’s because I had coffee in the morning, a diet Coke in the early afternoon and stupidly, I drank a low calorie high energy drink around four in the afternoon.  Whatever the reason, I was very tired yesterday from lack of sleep. A nap would have been very nice.

So, I’m ready at 11:30.  I hold off eating lunch, because I didn’t want to be chowing down when the auditor showed up. I didn’t dare lay down, because I didn’t want to answer the door from a sound sleep.

12:30.  No word.

1:30.  No word.

She calls about 1:40 “I’m running late, what are the directions?”  She shows up within fifteen minutes. She comes in, sits down at the table, finds the printouts of the monthly payrolls, takes down the information, just from those, says “That should be it.”  She leaves.  I don’t think she was here for ten minutes.

Of course, it was too late to have lunch, since dinner wasn’t all that far away.  I ate four Honey Graham crackers and had a big glass of water.

Then I took a nap.

The topic: Weight loss forum
----------------------------------------------

Over at Benny’s, one of the forums is for weight loss. Last week, one of my Disney pals, who is also in rescue, decided she had “too much junk in her trunk” and was going to get serious about getting healthier. She asked if she could invite people to the private weight loss forum.

I made her a moderator.

And last weekend, I found a great script at a reduced price for journaling weights, exercise and food intake.  Photos can also be uploaded.  I’m hoping this helps people who take advantage of it to actually view their progress and see how their bodies are changing.  Got that set up with a few minor changes from the author (who offered to give me a free copy of the upgrade).

I also found a ticker that can be used.  It’s actually for pregnant women or women who just had babies, but it works well for us.  Since so many people were having a problem getting it to work on the forums as a sig file, I had to figure out how to save screen shots as jpegs.  But I got it done and now, the tickers work nicely.

Anyway, it seems to be fairly popular.  People are posting, asking question, sharing stories.  The support will be nice.

I swore after my last big weight loss, that I wouldn’t buy new larger pants ever again.  And it’s about time.  I won’t do it.  It’s time to cut back on the junk food and downsize my portions.

----------------------------------------------

The winner of this necklace had this to say:

“I got my necklace!  I love it. I bought it because I was in love with the flower beads, but those aurora borealis beads are exquisite, I had no idea.
Thanks, it’s a beautiful piece.”

I mentioned that it’s really hard to photograph the sparklieness of the crystals, how they reflect the light so nicely, to which she replied:

“Right, you couldn’t tell in the pictures, it’s one of those new toys you get that you just can’t stop playing with.

I left it on the kitchen counter last night so I could pick it up when ever I wanted. I’d go in there and it would be placed neatly in a different spot, so I’m not the only one who was fascinated.

You needn’t worry, you have a good eye for beads and color.”

There are still necklaces up for auction, with more to come. I can only say that the pictures do NOT do them justice, that they’re much nicer IRL, than on a web browser.  I might try doing little movies of them in the sun and see if that helps.

Lisa’s stomatitis is back.  The vet upped her prednisone for the next two weeks.  Twice a day for a week, then once a day for a week. Then an appointment. She’s also officially back on the Clindamycin, which he said was a good move on my part (I put her back on it Saturday).

He said it’s possible the amount of pred she’s been getting wasn’t sufficient to keep her immune system at bay.  If this helps, then good, she won’t need anymore extractions.

Before her next appointment in two weeks, she’ll be taken off of food the night before, just in case he needs to pull some of her teeth.  There are five that he would pull.  He said he hates doing it, he feels so bad for the kitties when he does, but he said there’s really no alternative.

At least she likes the pill pockets, so that should help out a bit.  Poor little girl.

The topic: Sigh
----------------------------------------------

Last Friday, Brian and I went shopping. He got home early and it was nice to get the shopping done and not have to worry about it on the weekend.

We’d gotten my mom a case of Sharp’s at CostCo, so stopped by her house on the way home. I knocked at the back door and it took forever for her to get it open.  The smell of cigarette smoke surrounded her.

Brian carried the case in and set it on the dryer.  She said “let me pay you” and I followed her in.  There, next to her spot on the sofa was a can of Bud and an ashtray, with ashes and a cigarette butt.  I looked at it.

“Oh, that’s from last week.”

Yeah, right.  She keeps the place spotless.  She said that she was just feeling down and got a six-pack of beer and a pack of the cheapest cigarettes they had.  She said “I only smoked two.”   She was lying. She said she’d only had one beer.  But she was doing the lip licking thing, the I’m really thirsty thing.  I doubt she’d only had one beer.

She said “are you mad at me?”  No, I’m disappointed.  You were doing so good.  I left without taking any money for the Sharp’s.  I didn’t care about the money.  When I walked out the door, she followed me.  “You won’t tell Brian will you?”  I answered “Of course I’ll tell Brian.”

When I got home, I called her, we had a long talk.

I told her “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me”. She’s fooled me twice now.  I think I’ll have a hard time believing her from now on, when it comes to cigarettes and beer.

about the huge pet food recall.  Since we feed Wellness canned and KittyMeeze gets Wellness at night and a can of Fancy Feast in the morning, I figured we’d be safe.

But this morning, when I dished up the food out of that little can of Fancy Feast, the tuna chunks the cats usually do not like (KittyMeeze will NOT eat it), a little later, I started to think about it.  I ran to the garage and grabbed a can of the tuna, looking for the ingredients.  Damn these eyes.  The print is tiny, tiny, tiny.  I grab a pair of reading glasses.  Not strong enough and not enough light in the garage.

I go into the kitchen and read the ingredients.  Okay, made by Purina, crap, they’re on the recall list.  Look for the “wheat gluten” on the label.  Spit, there it is.

Run back to the computer to check the can against the list.  Whew, Mighty Dog is the only Purina product in question.

This is just a horrible, horrible thing and I hope those people who knew there was a problem last year and did nothing about it, rot in hell.

The topic: This weekend
----------------------------------------------

We’re in the process of changing the boundary lines for the property.  Instead of two forty acre parcels, we want one seventy acre parcel and one ten acre parcel.

Well, San Diego County does everything in it’s power to make any type of land change as difficult as possible, unless you’re a big developer with a buttload of money.  We aren’t big developers and we most certainly don’t have a buttload of money.

This started last year and the notice came from the county last week, that there are a number of things that must be rectified before the change can take place.  One of them was the property has “structures” on it.  The structures consist of trailers with equipment in them.  So, Brian and his brother went up to the property late Friday morning and Brian just got home last night around ten.  They emptied the trailers and put them on Mark’s property.

I had the weekend to myself.  Friday, I went down to the little taco shop for lunch and got a beef taco with guacamole and a quesadilla.  I went to the grocery store and got a pint of Hagen Daas light ice cream.  I had the ice cream for dinner.  I went to bed around ten, ten thirty.  At about five til two in the morning, some cat decided it wanted out.  It was Lorelai.  She scratches at the door.  She stand full length and pulls her paws down the glass, repeatedly.  i ended up taking the spray bottle and shooting her with it.  Then I’d go back to bed, start to nod off, and she’d start up again.  I finally got back to sleep sometime after 2:40.

Saturday morning, I got up early, got dressed, brushed my teeth and hair (the area around my eyes, left side mostly, looked like I’d had silly putty injected and I could actually move the puffiness around).  I went to the little restaurant for breakfast.   The eggs didn’t taste right, I don’t know it if was the eggs or me.  You know how sometimes things just don’t taste right, but no one else has a problem with them.  Saturday morning, I felt like crap. I slept a lot.

Early in the afternoon, I opened the house up and started reading a book I’d started last week.  I finished it that night.  I had a great night’s sleep.  And yesterday, I started reading another book, finished that one and started on a third.

I didn’t spend much time online.   It’s been forever since I took a weekend to just read.  It was really nice.

One of the signs of a kitty bladder infection is frequent squatting.  Whenever I see this, I start that cat on amoxicillan, which usually clears the problem up.

Last week, Rachel did the frequent squatting with a dribble of urine.  I spent the day Thursday trying to grab her up and pill her.  She’d have none of it. She turned her nose up at pill pockets. She is not a treat driven kitty.

She wouldn’t let me near her after my first big attempt.  Finally, yesterday, I was able to get close enough to her to get a pill in her.  It was a little more easy last night.  I guess maybe she realized I wasn’t trying to kill her.

Poor little girl, I know she’s uncomfortable.

----------------------------------------------

The topic: We have gopher holes
----------------------------------------------
