Who’s a rat bastard? Free credit report dot com, that’s who.
This morning, I’m checking the online credit statements for new charges. There’s one from that credit report company for $11.95. I know I didn’t sign up for it. I call them. Seems Brian signed up for it. Ohhhh-kay. “You can’t cancel it, the person who signed up for it has to cancel.” Ohhhh-kay.
Brian’s not home. I call him. “Did you sign up for this?” Yes. (I think to myself ‘why?’) I say “did you know we already get a monthly credit report?” Nope, he didn’t know. I told him there was a charge on the credit card statement. Here’s the kicker.
“I never gave them a credit card number!”
I believe him. Because I know him. He would not have signed up for a service like this. He was just curious at the moment and the minute they’d have asked him for a number, he’d have said “gee, I didn’t realize there’d be a charge for a free report, never mind, I don’t want it”. So, how did they get the number? I dunno. But I’m not happy about it in the least.
So, when he came home he did call, he did cancel, he did get a cancellation confirmation number. And I’ll check the CC statement and if we’re not credited that money, I’ll put in a dispute.
He thinks since they have his social security number (shudder), they were able to pull up all sorts of information about him and one of the things was a list of credit cards and they must have just arbitrarily picked one to start billing.
Rat bastards. They should be put out of business, is what I think. Note to self: find a website where I can file an official complaint against them.
