The topic: My most disliked chore

----------------------------------------------

Is cleaning out the litterboxes.  Does anybody know of a way to make it fun?

Diane,

With as many as you have, you might try my way. I use 45-gal tubs with 40-50 lbs of litter in each. You NEVER throw it out, only add more….and with where you live you could have a couple outside. I do, but it is also a covered enclosure.

I use Natures Miracle in the house and chicken crumbles for the enclosure cats. They are both scoopables. Although, if you use the crumbles, I suggest dumping all of it every month or so, it starts to stink since it’s not really litter, but it’s 12.00 for 50lbs here, so well worth it.

I scoop daily and if they pee/poop on the side, I clean that off immediately. I’ve been doing this for 3 years now and I LOVE it, never have to clean a litter box again, well, except the side wiping.

It’s a tad expensive to get started, but after that, a piece of cake. I had hubs put a hole in the side of each box so the cats could go in and out for the ones in the enclosure.

Inside, they use either a ladder to hop in and out or the scratcher I have next to it.

I have one box inside since I scoop all the time for them and 3 outside for 7 cats and it works GREAT!

If you’re interested, I have a link that shows how to do it and is how I got started.

Oh, when I say “cleaning”, I don’t mean scrubbing them, I mean scooping them.

We’ve got six in the garage and six in the house.  If I did them every day, it wouldn’t take twenty minutes to do them all.  But I hate doing them. I don’t like the litter we use, it’s dusty and nasty and I end up covered in a dry fine powder (which I know because I smell it when I hit the shower).

We do use the large containers, I don’t know the last time we completely emptied one to clean it out and add to it. I don’t think we have.

The litter we get (at CostCo) is also a PITA to use, it comes in 40lb bags and it’s heavy to be dragging through the house.  I try to ask Brian to help, but he’s usually not here when I do the litterboxes, so I have to do it myself.

I just don’t like doing them.

As for inappropriate urination, I have a bunch of cleaning towels and I’ll grab a couple, get one wet, grab my bottle of Nature’s Miracle (I buy four gallons at a time) and just go through the house, cleaning up the stinky areas. Funny, I don’t hate doing that as much as scooping the litterboxes.
