The topic: We lost him

----------------------------------------------

We just got back from emergency.  The vet thinks he threw a blood clot.

I’d let him out of the crate earlier after he had a strong bout of coughing.  He ran under the entertainment center, then under the sofa.

He was taking longer than I expected to come out of the earlier sedation.  I stayed with him, well, on the sofa and I could hear him breathing under me.  Around three, I thought I’d toddle off to bed and I went to say goodnight to him.  He didn’t respond to my touch, so I opened up the sofa (recliner sofa).

The entire area under him was covered in urine.  Alarmed, I pulled him out.  He let out a couple of horrible cries, waking Brian up.  Red was paralyzed.  I told Brian we had to get him in.  I was thinking maybe it was from the shot/sedative and called the ER to let them know we were on our way in.

Brian told them when they took him back, that we wanted him euthanized.  Like Brian said “this is just too hard on him”.  We were asked if we wanted to be with him when he went and I said “yes”.  Brian seemed reluctant and when I asked him why, he said “it’s so hard”.  Oh, but, honey, this is part of our job, saying goodbye to a cat who’s been with us for so long. It’s the least we can do for him.

They called us into an examining room and Red was on the table, wrapped in a blanket.  He had the IV started in his leg.  The doctor said that he was already dying, that he had most likely thrown a clot.  She gave him a sedative, then when he was asleep, gave him the final solution that ended his life.  She said that he was in a lot of pain from this and it was something that just happens. She told us she sees it a lot in red cats.

This is just so hard.  Brian said on the way home that he wishes there’d been some way for the vet to foresee this happening and he wouldn’t have had to had his last hours the way they were and we could have released him this morning before this hit.

And then there were thirty-four.

God speed, Red, you had a great life with us and we loved you very, very much.

*tears*

We’ll see you again someday.  Meantime, we’ll keep your memory close in our hearts and place your ashes with those who have gone before you.

Goodbye, baby.

*tears*

Red was a beautiful boy and I am so sorry you lost him.  You gave him so many years of safety and love he would never have had on the street.  I’m glad you were able to say goodbye and release him from his pain to be well again at the Bridge.

I’m so very sorry.  I know I’m clear across the country, but because you let us into your lives as you do, I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels like an Aunt or Uncle to your fur-babies.  And though we’ve never stroked their fur, or felt them purr, we share deeply in your loss, and wish there were some way we could comfort you and them.

Brightest Blessings, Red, we’ll meet at the Rainbow bridge.

Oh damn Diane I am so sorry about your beautiful boy.  I got an e-mail from Bobbie that was talking about all the cat losses lately and she mentioned you and I thought Oh no no no no no.  Yes.  :(  I crying for you and Red this morning and wishing I could give you and Brian a hug.  Please don’t feel bad about the last few hours.  You couldn’t know this would happen.  Look at the life you gave him of safety and love.  He would have been dead so long ago without you and Brian, just like so many of your kitties.

With tears and hugs,
Lisa

I was so very sad to read this. Tears for you, Brian and the beautiful Red.  Now his spirit is free and he will hurt no more. That is for those who loved him that are left behind. (((LV and Brian)))

I am so very sorry!!  Please remember that you and Brian gave him a much better life than some kitties can even dream about.  Red went to the Bridge knowing that he was loved very, very much.  Hugs to you and Brian from Roger and me, and headbumps and nose kisses from Muldoon and Wilella.

I am so very sorry for your loss.  I visit you and your family thorugh this site most days as their story, your story of love and care both inspires me to do my bit here in Oz, and makes me glad to know that there are people like you who truly love and care for animals….. your cats.
Red was so lucky to have you for his very own, he may not have ever been a lap cat, or a pat cat…. but he was a free cat, a beloved boy and he knew you as family in his own way…
You did all that you could for him, and as none of us truly know what the future may hold, you did all that you knew you could do for him..
You gave him a loving chance, a warm and safe home in your house adn h will always live on in your heart and in your memories… he is at that bridge, renewed, well, fiesty still, but with an understanding at the depth of your true compassion and your love… Bless you all, you are all in my thoughts and in my prayers.

Diane and Brian,
So sorry for your loss and for it to be in such panic.  You know I do understand your pain, ours is still fresh too.  Huggles to you both!

I am so sorry LV.

A few years ago my father lost his cat Mars to this.  Sometimes there really is nothing you can do but let them go peacefully.

Red was very lucky to have you and Brian.  You put so much work into getting him out of the rafters.  The last few hours may not have been very good, but what if was still feral?  He knows that in the end you did the best that you could for him.  I am sure he is with your other kitties, and very happy now.  CeilidhCat was right though, we all feel a distant part of your family, and we really appreciate you sharing the good and bad parts of your fur family.

Oh I am so sorry to read this. Red was very fortunate to have been a part of your life. I’m no doubt sure that you also feel that you were blessed to have been allowed to be in his life.
