The topic: Catcam computer crashed

----------------------------------------------

It won’t boot up.

Scream. It’s an old computer running Win98SE. It’s got all of my DOS games.

*sigh*

The hubby is deciding what to do about his Win98 computer too…....he needs a faster one, but the 98 runs our quickbooks…...so we are in a dilema…..do we upgrade quickbooks (at quite an expense) or just try to hang in there with it for a while longer?

Eventually it will die I know…...I miss my DOS games too!

Well, I was able to get it back up.  I did a little research and the fix was easy.  But I am going to back up all the hard drives on that computer and soon I’ll clean the hard drive and reinstall windows98SE.

As for QuickBooks, I had to upgrade as the earlier versions no longer supported payroll updates.

I still have all of my Win98 disks, so if push comes to shove and the old computer needs work, I’ll do whatever I have to to keep it with the old operating system.  (I also have my DOS 6.0 floppies.)

It’s an epidemic. My Win98 box refused to spin up last week, too. I suspected stiction, and rotating the box 90 degrees was sufficient to goose it. It’s back on its feet now, so to speak. What was up with yours?

It happened when I tried starting up the webcams.  Unbeknownst to me, the officecam was actually unplugged from the USB hub.  So, something I did shutting down apparantly froze something with the startup.

I looked for motherboard problems, hard drive not booting up, you know, all the types of support questions you look for when you don’t know what the problem is.

On one forum someone mentioned when the computer is off, unplugging the power cord from the computer and holding down the power button for about thirty seconds.  I guess this resets something inside.

When I restarted, it loaded right back up.

I’m glad it’s fixed, but it is not a fun way to start the day.
