The topic: Time to clean up my PC
----------------------------------------------

It's getting bogged down and slow, websites like UPS no longer run properly, and I can't send invoices from Quickbooks (but there's no problem when I use the laptop) no matter which browser I use and it's actually starting to get on my nerves.

So, I started copying the hard drive over to an external drive last night and for some reason, it stopped less than halfway through and I had to restart it this morning. Copying over 355GB of data. Thought it would be done this morning. Nope. 200GB to go, damn it.

Once that's done, the fun will start. Guess what I'm doing this weekend?

Well, there is some software I no longer use on a regular basis, so it will be nice to clean up the hard drive. I'm copying everything because you never know what you'll need in the future. I have some software that's from the 1900s that still works.

I know I'll be glad when it's finished. Fun stuff!

The topic: Well, that was an easy fix
----------------------------------------------

I had to ftp a bunch of files up to a website this morning and I was only getting .25 (yep, point two five) Mbps.  I should have been getting over one hundred.

Called my provider, and they tried to upsell a modem - "yours is old".  Not that old, buddy and I'm getting close to 1Gb download speeds. It's not the modem

That wasn't a productive call and I checked the speeds on Brian's system and his what it was supposed to be. Damn it. It's my computer.  It took hours to figure out, there was something wrong with the driver for my ethernet card. Problem was I couldn't find one to replace it. Not very easily, anyway.

I tried to download it from Dell, and get a message "You don't have a Dell system". I don't?  Kiss my ass, I sure do.

I ended up over on Intel, who bought out the company that made my ethernet card and downloaded a little piece of Intel software that scanned my system and let me know there were some updates. One was for that ethernet card.

Installed the software, the internet is super quick. The files I spent a half hour trying to upload this morning (and didn't even make it a quarter of the way when I got frustrated and just shut it down), took less than a minute this afternoon.

Then I tried the bank and UPS. Like a dream.

I don't understand why an upload problem would cause the issues I was having. Download speeds were rocking, it was just the uploading.

But it's all good now!  I don't have to redo my computer!  yippee
