The topic: “The network with the least dropped calls….”

----------------------------------------------

You sure couldn’t prove it by me.  Calls drop like crazy when I call Brian at work and at Disneyland, there were a couple of cells I couldn’t even connect to before losing the connection. And one of those cells was also on Cingular.  I could call one partner’s phone no problem, but I couldn’t call the other.  Even when they were standing close to one another.

Anyway, I contacted Cingular this past weekend when I couldn’t get through to Brian.  This was their response this morning:

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail Cingular Wireless regarding not being able to complete calls. I am happy to help you with your inquiry and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Calls not going through or not completing can be caused my numerous factors. Low network signal, high network congestion, and the number you are calling not being connected properly to the network, etc. The best way to avoid this issue would be to turn your phone off and back on often. This gets your equipment connected to the network and registered often. Those that you call that have cell phones should do this often as well to make sure they are connected properly. If the issue is low signal or network congestion, unfortunately, turning your phone off and back on will not help those issues. I will notify the department that works on the website concerning the 404 pages being reached. Please visit our website at http://www.cingular.com for the latest pricing plans, phones and promotions. If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us via email. We know you have a choice in the wireless industry and thank you for choosing Cingular Wireless! Sincerely, Ray D------ Cingular Wireless Online Customer Care Professional

So, I guess what I have to do is to tell everyone “hey, keep turning your phone off and on, that shouldn’t use any extra battery power, here in the middle of the Magic Kingdom!”

Yeah, right.

Hey~Re the turn cell on and off…I usually turn mine off as I charge it…not just randomly…once or twice a week is good.  If you go farther away from home then I do you should shut it off and turn is back on when you get there…IE when you get to disney, shut the phone off…turn it back on…good to go smile

Sorry to hear you are having such problems.  I’m happy to say I’ve been very happy with Cingular.  I’ve only had a few dropped calls and that was because of poor signal once and dead battery once.  I switched from Sprint, and their network was so much worse.

However, I have to say that I’m not surprised you get poor to no reception at Disneyland.  There would be so much interference in a place like that to begin with.  Plus it would not surprise me if Disneyland had their own “internal” cellular network or some other internal network which has a side effect of blocking out or severely limiting connectivity to outside networks.  Do you know if people on other networks have problems at Disneyland as well, or if it is just Cingular?  Also, do you know if other Cingular users have problems at Disneyland?

There is also the possibility that your phone has either a defect or just has a very poor antenna.  If you take it into a store they can test it for you to make sure it is in fact operating properly.

And also calls can drop if the other person has poor signal or a poor network.  You can be on the best network in the nation, but if you only people on very poor networks or people who only get poor reception, you’ll still get dropped calls, at no fault of your own or your network.

“Even when they were standing close to one another” ... that’s a bit funny, and probably seems really frustrating at the time, but I’m sure you know that isn’t how cell phones work.  It’s not a direct phone-to-phone connection.

Remember “least dropped calls” doesn’t mean “no dropped calls” wink

Anyways, again sorry to hear about your problems, and I hope you figure them out.

Well, the person I called constantly (even put her on speed dial, the first after my husband while we were there, we were playing phone tag games) and her partner, the one I could never connect to, are both Cingular customers.

It was frustrating to not be able to speak with those on my own network.

I would hope my phone doesn’t have a problem, since I just got it on the 8th of this month.  A Samsung SGH-zx20.  And I found out today that I can’t manage my contacts or messages via my computer. The salesgirl at the Cingular store assured me I could do so.

She was wrong. And I didn’t keep the packaging, which I’d need to return my phone for a refund. I have the box, but not the internal packaging.  *sigh*

I fired off another email to Cingular when I hooked up that pricey cable that just got here today, installed the software that was included and saw all of those greyed out portions of the Samsung PC Studio software.

Yeah, I hate it when Sales people don’t know what they are talking about.  You should not need the internal packaging. The sales rep told you the phone could do something which it cannot; Cingular is liable for what their reps say.

I would keep calling them or emailing until you get to someone with a high enough authority and intelligence to realize that they are the ones who made a mistake. It can be a headache though.

When I switched from Sprint, I was canceling my contract because the reception was horrible. One rep told me they would waive the cancellation fee, then they later charged me. I had to go back and forth with them for a couple weeks, but eventually got through to someone high enough who honored what the rep said, because, well frankly they have to legally.

Good luck grin
