The topic: Review:  Marley and Me

----------------------------------------------

CENTURY CITY, CALIF. – From the director of the Devil Wears Prada and based on the New York Times best-selling novel from John Grogan, Marley & Me leaps onto three-disc Blu-ray, two-disc Special Edition and Single Disc DVD March 31 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.  Featuring an incredible A-list cast, Oscar®-nominee* Owen Wilson (Night at the Museum) and Emmy® winner** Jennifer Aniston (The Break-Up) star in a hilarious tail about a family who learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog.  When newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan (Wilson and Aniston) leave the snow of Michigan for the beaches of Miami, they decide to adopt a yellow Labrador retriever named Marley, in order to give them a taste of parenthood.  However, things get ruff when the adorable 12-pound puppy transforms into a highly-strung, boisterous and uncontrollable 100-pound steamroller of unbridled energy that always finds trouble.  From flunking obedience school, chewing off dry wall, taking a bite out of the sofa, stealing a Thanksgiving turkey and chasing the UPS guy, Marley causes absolute chaos.  Despite the mayhem he generates over the years, Marley sees the Grogans through the ups and downs of life and the countless challenges that come with it.  The family soon discovers that Marley, “the world’s worst dog,” somehow brings out the best in them.

The delightful comedy adventure features an ensemble supporting cast including Eric Dane (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Golden Globe®-winner Kathleen Turner (Best Actress, Prizzi’s Honor) and Oscar®-winner Alan Arkin (Best Supporting Actor, Little Miss Sunshine).

Featuring love and fun for the whole family, Marley & Me will be available in three DVD configurations including Fox’s first ever three-disc Blu-ray release.

We watched this Sunday night, after doing a firmware upgrade on the Blu-Ray player, since the movie wouldn’t play without it.

Having had pets for our entired married life, have many, many pets, we know what the outcome will be. We just don’t know how and when it will happen.

“Marley and Me” is a sweet little movie about a puppy adopted into a family and their lives together.  It was a nice movie, a sad movie, that, honestly?  Knowing how it would end, I kept watching the clock to see how much longer until the sad part would come.  Marley was a good dog, but adopted into a family who didn’t know how to control him and for someone who is just a little afraid of big dogs, I cringed through a lot of it. Shaking my head, thinking “that would never do”.

It wasn’t action packed, it wasn’t a real funny movie, it was about a family and their dog. There were some comedic times, like washing the dog poo in search of something of value he’d eaten (this dog ate anything).

All in all, in my opinion, this movie doesn’t really have great re-watchability.  Brian agreed. We’re glad we didn’t see it at the theater.  It would be nice for a one time rental, but for us, it’s not like Bolt.  Neither of us left the movie saying “I want a dog like Marley!”   The only part of the movie I related to was Marley’s last time at the vet.  And that’s because I’ve been through it so many times with the cats.

For more about the movie, check out the Marley and Me movie website.

I’m going to go watch the extras right now, will be back to report on those later today.

The extras:

Deleted scenes—-I watched this first with the director’s comments, then without.  My personal opinion is that many of the scenes should have been left in, making for a funnier movie with more fleshing out. I especially wish they’d left in the final scene with Jennifer Aniston and Marley. Her character came across as very unsympathetic to Marley in much of the movie and this scene belied all of that.

Finding Marley—-All those dogs played just one? Amazing.

Breaking The Golden Rule—-The training that went into making the dogs appear so gosh darned unruly.  Who’d have thought it took so much work to make a dog look so throughly “bad”?

On The Set With Marley: Dog Of All Trades—-Tips on movie making from Marley himself

Animal Adoption—-Talking with rescuers, advocating adopting shelter or rescue dogs instead of buying from a breeder. Great PSA. You just know after the movie came out, people wanted a dog just like Marley.  Also addresses the requirements of proper animal ownership.  Spay/neuter, get a dog that suits your lifestyle, your home, etc.  You know how the saying goes:  “Don’t breed or buy, while shelter dogs die”

Gag Reel—-Cast and crew horsing around and bloopers.

When Not To Pee—-One of the few times one of the trained dogs, Clyde, was naughty and how that scene was incorporated into the finished movie.

Dog Training Trivia Track—-The entire movie with pop-up video! Except this video helps to properly train your dog, with tips from professional trainers. Cool addition!  How not to raise a Marley dog!

Like Bolt!, this set includes a DVD that plays on a regular DVD player and a digital copy, that you can download to your computer or media player, such as iPod or Zune.
