Summer was so hot that I felt bad for the birds out front. We kept the bird feeder full, but there was no water. Well, a little thing hanging from the corner of the house, Brian kept that filled.
So, I grabbed a disposable aluminum roasting pan (I got a bunch of them at CostCo one year, worked nicely as litter boxes in the big crate). I put it on the bank out front and filled it with water. I saw mostly crows around it, but they took advantage of having fresh water on hot days.
This year, Brian moved the pan to a location that got more shade during the day. And, once again, he keeps it fresh. And the birds like it. Not so many crows this year, but we have a fair amount of pigeons. And I like to see them at the water and I'm glad we can help out the wildlife just a little.
This past week, Brian went to one of the home stores, not sure which, Home Depot or Lowe's. And he excitedly told me about a new bowl he got, just for the birds. It's thick, it's like pottery, it's probably three inches deep. It looks like a bird bath bowl. He got rid of the aluminum pan and put this in it's place, a little into the pine needles. And he filled it. It blends quite well and you have to look to see it. Much nicer than the aluminum pan.
Late yesterday afternoon, I walked outside and noticed some pigeons at it. I counted eight birds partaking of the water.
And it made me smile.
I need smiles after the past couple of months.
